A New Type of Training (both in-person and phone).

I recently tried out a new way of training ACT, specifically for the New England Vet Center Counselors in Mystic, CT. They gave it some rave reviews. Based on feedback I have included more practice for the trainees.

After the basic introductions, CEU stuff, etc. I explain that I am going to demonstrate how I go about Setting Up the Therapeutic Context for ACT (The Set Up for short). I then do that demonstration. It includes Informed Consent, the iView and the Life Manual.

The Set Up was constructed over a couple of years by Dr. Hambright and myself, plus some post docs and interns. It contains all the elements of ACT.

Once I have shown The Set Up I then go back and talk about the concepts of ACT, but now I have a clear example of ACT to use during my explanation.

After we discuss the concepts of ACT some of the audience members practice The Set Up.

Once we have that in place I move on to the Let Go section of ACT. Again, I demonstrate how to get that work started with the Life Manual and move into having clients recognize the rewards they are missing out on while struggling with suffering.

We discuss the Let Go section and then trainees practice doing that section.

This Demonstrate and then Explain Concepts seems to get the ACT concepts across to people very quickly. Plus at the end of the training they have a very good template for doing their first couple of ACT sessions.

I am going to do this training with my next phone group.

Drop me a line if you are interested in hearing more about this training.
