Tien Kuei MSc

Therapists often struggle to bridge the gap between theory and practice when applying process-based therapies. Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) offers a powerful framework for deepening client change by using the therapeutic relationship as a natural context for transformation. Through moment-to-moment functional analysis, therapists can recognize and respond contingently to clients’ clinically relevant behaviors, fostering emotional depth, interpersonal growth, and meaningful behavior change.

In this interactive workshop, you will learn how to apply FAP’s core principles to enhance your therapeutic effectiveness across modalities, including ACT and CBT. You will explore how to integrate ACT’s Hexaflex with FAP’s approach to relational learning, helping clients move toward their values in real time. The workshop will close with a structured framework for applying FAP skills in practice, strengthening the therapist-client connection, and cultivating profound therapeutic change.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify your own therapist avoidance repertoires and explain how the contexts in which commonly used interventions may be inadvertently counter-therapeutic.

  1. Describe ways to augment the therapeutic relationship - and the therapist repertoire - to evoke behavioral change and as a natural reinforcer to shape behavioral change.

  2. Describe how FAP can translate ACT's formulation of a client's intra-personal behaviors into interpersonal clinical targets for change.
