Ciarrochi, J. (2009). The survey of life principles: Manual and card sorting task. Unpublished manuscript, University of Wollongong
This is the manual for the survey of life principles (SLP), an instrument we have been developing for the past two years. It contains an ACT-consistent card sorting task, a number of exercises that can be done with the card sorting tasks, and a review of three studies we have conducted to validate the SLP.
What are life principles? We use this term to encompass values (ends in themselves) and abstract goals (e.g., honesty)
Utility of the measure: The studies suggest that the SLP relates in expected ways to social, emotional, and psychological well-being. We are now conducting longitudinal research on it.
Content validity of the measure: We have shown that the SLP distinguishes between the big six personality types, which are neuroticism, extraversion, openess, agreeableness, consciensiousness, and psychoticism. That is, each of these personality types has been shown to have a distinct pattern of valuing.
