Enhancing Functional Analysis in ACT: A Precise Approach with the Three Rs Method
Learning Objectives:
Understand a Consistent Framework: Describe a systematic approach to functional analysis within ACT that overcomes common ambiguities.
Apply the Three Rs Method: Demonstrate how to implement the Three Rs Method for Functional Contextual Analysis in real-world settings.
Abstract:
Many ACT therapists find functional analysis challenging—even though it is central to effective practice. Traditional tools (e.g., Skinner’s Three-term contingency, the ACT Matrix, and The Choice Point) offer valuable insights but can be inconsistent in today’s complex clinical contexts. Rushed or incomplete analyses risk misdirecting interventions and missing the whole picture.
In this interactive presentation, you will explore the Three Rs Method—a contemporary approach built on the foundations of Skinner’s work, Relational Frame Theory, and insights from the ACBS Community.
First Hour:
Presentation: Learn the theory and practical steps behind the Three Rs Method.
Interactive Exercise: Engage in a live demonstration that clarifies how to identify and analyse behavioural patterns.
Second Hour:
Small Group Work: Collaborate to apply these concepts to case examples and share your insights.
Q & A Session: Address your questions and discuss challenges with peers and the presenter.
By the end of this session, you’ll have a clear, consistent tool for conducting functional contextual analyses that can help you select interventions more effectively and build lasting psychological flexibility.
About the Trainer
Jim Lucas has mentored and taught many therapists to integrate ACT into their practice effectively.
As an ACBS peer-reviewed trainer with the expertise to provide effective Acceptance and Commitment Therapy training, Jim balances theory, practical exercises, and real-world examples. He helps therapists to be empowered to use ACT confidently, authentically, and flexibly. Moving from theory to practice can be highly challenging, mainly when working with clients with unique complexities. Jim recognises the uncertainty from the early years of practising a new model. After many hours of therapy practice, working closely with ACT experts, and applying it personally, Jim has come to know ACT intimately. He truly appreciates the opportunity to share his insights and show therapists how to help clients build psychological flexibility.
