Australian ACT Supervision - Julian McNally, Melbourne

Expert Clinical Supervision for ACT Therapists

Are you a registered psychologist or therapist seeking insightful and supportive clinical supervision that aligns with your professional development needs?

With 30 years of experience as a practicing psychologist in Australia, including approximately 3000 hours of direct one-on-one supervision, and over 20 years practising and learning about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and other contextual approaches, I offer a depth of knowledge and a flexible, evidence-based approach to help you flourish in your profession.

I am an AHPRA-registered psychologist with endorsement in the Counselling Psychology Area of Practice with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA). I provide supervision to all therapists including provisional psychologists (including 5+1 pathway registrars), general registered psychologists, and registrars pursuing endorsement in Counselling Psychology as well as being a secondary supervisor for Clinical Psychology registrars. My experience also extends to supervising allied health professionals, including psychiatry registrars, mental health social workers and nurses and occupational therapists.

My Supervision Philosophy

My primary theoretical orientation is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), an evidence-based approach that resonates with many practitioners. This framework informs my supervision style, emphasizing a collaborative learning environment built on curiosity, humility, and a shared understanding of the challenges and rewards of clinical practice. I believe we are all “in the same boat,” client, practitioner and supervisor. One thing I really like about the ACT approach is not only does it help clients live a more fulfilling life, it helps practitioners deal with the challenges of our work.

While ACT is my core framework, my approach is enriched by training in several other therapeutic modalities, including Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Solution-Oriented Counselling, Narrative Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. This allows for a nuanced and integrative approach tailored to your specific cases and professional development goals.
