Abstract

Experiential avoidance could be a process that plays an important role in several psychological problems and disorders. Experiential avoidance and the opposite process, acceptance, can be measured with the acceptance and Action Questionnaire II (AAQ-II). The purpose of this study was to develop a Dutch version of the AAQ-II, by translating the questionnaire and examining its psychometric properties in different samples of the Dutch speaking population. The results indicate that the factor structure of the Dutch AAQ-II matches the factor structure of the English version. Construct validity, intern consistency, convergent and divergent validity are comparable in the Dutch and English version. Possible ways of using the AAQ-II in clinical practice as well as empirical research on the effects of experiential avoidance on human functioning are discussed.
