Abstract

This paper presents the case of experiential avoidance (EA) as a dimensional system, functionally defined in its verbal nature. The evidence of experiential avoidance as a critial factor in psychological distress is presented in the context of psychological problems identified as different in the mental health taxonomic systems. Functional contextualism is briefly defined to set the stage of the verbal contexts that should give account of experiential avoidance, where private events are not viewed as the causes of the problem, instead, they have to be explained as well as the verbal context that related private events and avoidance acting. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is presented as a radical changing the content of private events to solve the problem while others approached to exposure of the feared event. ACT is briefly described in its main characteristics as well as some comments to prevent experiential avoidance or to reduce the impact of verbal contexts is presented.
