Abstract: Objective To investigate the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment group counseling in improving the self-esteem of medical students. Methods Forty medical students with low self-esteem who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 20 participants in each group. The experimental group received eight weekly 120-minute sessions of acceptance and commitment group counseling. The control group received no intervention. Both groups were assessed using the Self-Esteem Scale and the Symptom Self-Rating Scale before and after the study. Results After 8 sessions of group counseling, the self-esteem scale score of the experimental group was significantly higher than that before the intervention, with a statistically significant difference (t=5.103, P<0.05); the total score of the symptom self-rating scale was significantly lower than that before the intervention, with a statistically significant difference (t=-3.424, P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the self-esteem scale and symptom self-rating scale scores before and after the intervention in the control group (t=2.054, -0.459, P>0.05). The change in the self-esteem scale score before and after the intervention in the experimental group was significantly greater than that in the control group, with a statistically significant difference (t=2.288, P<0.05). Conclusion Acceptance and commitment group counseling has a positive effect on improving the self-esteem level of medical students.
