Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of combining acceptance and commitment therapy and mindfulness on cognitive flexibility and dysfunctional attitudes of unaccompanied adolescent girls.

Method: The method of this semi-experimental study was a pre-test-post-test with a control group. The research sample consisted of 24 unaccompanied adolescent girls who were voluntarily selected from among the unaccompanied adolescent girls residing in care centers for unaccompanied girls in Mashhad who had responded positively to the researcher's call and were assigned to two equal groups, experimental and control, by simple randomization. The intervention was implemented in a group manner in 8 sessions on the experimental group. The instruments used in this study included the Dennis and Vanderwaal Cognitive Flexibility Questionnaire and the Alessandro and Burton Children and Adolescents Dysfunctional Attitudes Questionnaire, which participants answered in the pre-test and post-test stages. Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used to analyze the data.

Findings: The results showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms of cognitive flexibility and dysfunctional attitudes (self-centered perfectionism) (P<0.001). Therefore, the combination of acceptance and commitment therapy and mindfulness increased cognitive flexibility and reduced dysfunctional attitudes (self-centered perfectionism) in the experimental group of orphaned girls compared to the control group.
