Ross G. White Ph.D.

Hello all,

We named our ACBS SHHP SIG monthly meeting "Contextually Speaking". So we will use the event name from now on.

So let's get it down. We are very thrilled to invite a great guest speaker Dr Ross G. White for this monthly event.
The presentation title is "Sustainable High Performance: Being The Tree That Bends".

High-performance environments can push us to succeed at any cost. Concepts such as grit and mental toughness, which cast emotions as something to be controlled rather than understood, continue to be championed. But trying to control emotions can amplify the impact they have on our lives. True success is about thriving – performing well and feeling well. A Tanzanian proverb – ‘The wind does not break the tree that bends’ – signals the solution. Just as trees thrive by being firmly anchored in the ground, being willing to flex in the wind, and empowered by the sun’s energy, we too can thrive by being ‘Anchored’ in the present, ‘Willing’ to lean into our emotional experiences and ‘Empowered’ to make choices in line with our purpose. This is the A.W.E. of a Flexible Mind. Incorporating perspective-shifting insights and practical strategies drawn from Acceptance and Commitment Training and Compassion Focused Therapy, this presentation will help you, and the people you support, to thrive.

Learning outcomes for the presentation include:
1. Critically consider how some high-performance psychology concepts may thwart our ability to thrive.
2. Discuss how a tree’s anatomy provides a powerful metaphor for the Anchored, Willing and Empowered elements of a Flexible Mind.
3. Appreciate how - just like a tree must be responsive to changes in its environment - a Flexible Mind allows us to balance our Get, Threat and Reset motivational modes in our professional and personal lives.
4. Learn strategies and techniques that will promote thriving.
