Talking two languages: The Translation of Technical CBS Terms into Natural Language

In this page, members are encouraged to describe how they have operationalised different technical terms or ideas from CBS into more user friendly language. This stemmed fom a post on one of the Facebook groups related to CBS in which it was expressed that as therapists we are thinking with one language (a technical, behavioural account) in our own heads whilst using a different, more natural language in our overt interaction with the client.

Term technical definition or meaning Example of operationalisation
Generalisation the appearance of a behavior in a relatively heterogeneous range of contexts "I tell people I want to teach them to be their own therapists” or “I tell people they it’s not enough to just practice their back hand swing, they actually have to be able to use it in a game” or "I walk around the neighborhood coaching them to be skillful"
Valuing Engaging in behaviour where the predominant reinforcer is a verbally constructed pattern of dynamic consequences that are contacted within the activity itself I can see that as you talk about how you'd most want to be with your partner, your face kind of softens and your eyes begin to light up... this matters to you.
