Scary Sam The Don't Monster. Story by: Beth Lancellotti, Psy.D. & A.J. Colucci.

Scary Sam The Don't Monster is a picture book for children ages 4-8 that has been described by Dr. Tamar Black as a, "Delightful and captivating story written for elementary school children, based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy."  For many children, anxiety can be a real monster! For Joey, that monster is Sam, who follow him around all day saying, "DON'T do this" and "DON'T do that."  Sam makes Joey afraid to ride the school bus, raise his hand in class, play with the other kids, eat in the cafeteria, and join the soccer team.  Until one day, Joey's teacher, Miss Lilypond, teaches Joey a valuable lesson on facing his fears. Throughout the story, children learn that it's okay to have scary thoughts and feelings, and the best way to overcome anxiety is by "Doing," instead of giving into their fears.  This is done by taking small steps, rather than big ones.  This book can be used as an example and discussion starter for children to think about their own fears, make their own plan, and figure out the small teps that will help them reach their goals. It includes a note to parents and caregivers and helpful talking points to be discussed after reading the story.  Scary Sam The Don't Monster is a wonderful vehicle to introduce ACT concepts within the classroom, home, and therapy settings.
