Abstract

Background

Psychological flexibility, a core component of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), has been defined as the ability to cope with discomfort arising from the process of a valued goal pursuing. The Personalized Psychological Flexibility Index (PPFI) has been validated to measure multidimensions of psychological flexibility.

Objective

The current study aims to examine the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the PPFI (C-PPFI) among college students.

Methods

A total of 1390 college students completed the C-PPFI and other questionnaires at the same time. After 4 weeks, 331 participants completed the same questionnaires to assess the test-retest reliability.

Results

(Sample 1, N = 695) The exploratory factor analysis and parallel analysis showed that the C-PPFI consisted of 3 factors, with a total of 15 items; (Sample 2, N = 695) The confirmatory factor analysis shows that the 3-factor structure fits well (χ2 = 347.69, df = 87, CFI = 0.924, TLI = 0.908, RMSEA = 0.066, SRMR = 0.054). According to the results of the measurement invariance tests, the configural invariance, metric invariance, scalar invariance, and strict invariance of the 3-factor model, the C-PPFI scores were comparable between genders (Male = 666, Female = 724). Furthermore, the C-PPFI had high internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Based on the linear regression and the higher order (EFA), the C-PPFI demonstrated greater discriminative validity than the AAQ-II or the BEAQ.

Conclusion

It suggested that the Chinese version of the Personalized Psychological Flexibility Index (C-PPFI) has good reliability and validity among college students.
