Objective: To explore the intervention effects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on tension and anxiety emotions as well as experiential avoidance in college students with social anxiety.
Methods: A total of 24 participants with scores greater than 60 on the Social Anxiety Scale (SAI) were recruited and screened at Nanchang University and randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group using a random number table method. The experimental group received 6 weeks of ACT group psychological counseling, while the control group underwent general mental health education. Assessments were conducted using SAI and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-Second Edition (AAQ-II) at baseline, 1 week after the intervention, and 2 months post-intervention.
Results: One week post-intervention, the experimental group's scores on the SAI tension and anxiety dimensions and total score were lower than those of the control group [(28.20±4.08) vs. (36.00±6.82), (65.40±7.78) vs. (74.78±8.78), t=-3.065, -2.471, P<0.05 or 0.01]. Two months post-intervention, the experimental group also had lower scores on the SAI tension and anxiety dimensions, total score, and AAQ-II compared to the control group [(27.90±4.48) vs. (34.00±7.65), (64.00±8.08) vs. (73.11±8.77), (29.20±6.16) vs. (35.78±7.20), t=-2.149, -2.357, -2.145, all P<0.05].
Conclusion: ACT group psychological counseling may help reduce tension and anxiety emotions and experiential avoidance in college students with social anxiety.
