Brown University Health (BuH) Postdoctoral Fellowships in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Third-Wave Behavioral Therapies within a Telehealth-based Adult Partial Hospital Setting

The Adult Partial Hospital Program (PHP) at Brown University Health (BuH) delivers third-wave mindfulness and acceptance-based cognitive behavioral treatments including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Our telehealth program provides treatment to adults ages 18 years and older who present with a range of psychological problems, including trauma and stressor-related disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, and personality disorders. The program provides six hours of treatment five days per week, and all patients attend three groups, individual therapy sessions, and medication management sessions with a psychiatrist daily.

We offer two tracks and applicants with relevant experience are welcome to apply to either or both:

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): In the BuH General Track, patients are provided with skills focused on values and goals clarification, increasing acceptance towards difficult feelings and thoughts while engaging in meaningful behaviors, improving interpersonal relationships, and increasing mindfulness and other coping behaviors.  Depending upon clinical interests and clinic needs, the Fellow may be involved with available specialty tracks: young adult, or BPD/emotion regulation difficulties, or co-occurring substance use disorders that integrate ACT for these specific areas of concern. The Fellow will be encouraged to develop group programming that aligns with their clinical interests and identified clinic needs.

2) DBT-PE, ACT, and Third Wave Behavioral Treatments for PTSD: The BuH PHP Trauma Track offers comprehensive treatment for PTSD, emotion dysregulation, and trauma-related concerns. The treatment approach is grounded in Dialectical Behavior Therapy Prolonged Exposure (DBT PE). Individuals in the Trauma Track progress through two stages of treatment. Stage 1 focuses on building readiness for trauma-focused treatment through stabilization of unsafe behaviors, reducing avoidance, learning about PTSD and related issues, and building a toolbox of coping skills. Stage 2 consists of Prolonged Exposure (PE), during which patients complete imaginal and in vivo exposures. Group programming offers: (1) psychoeducation on PTSD and trauma-related topics paired with related skills from 2nd- and 3rd-wave evidence-based PTSD treatments (i.e., DBT, ACT for PTSD, CPT, STAIR), (2) DBT skills training, (3) support around in vivo exposure practice, and (4) imaginal exposure and processing in a therapist-led group format (Stage 2 patients only). Helpful training experiences supporting applications to this fellowship track include experience with DBT, PE, and/or other exposure therapies.
