Enhancing Exposure with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Discover how to integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Exposure effectively, coherently and efficiently.

21st & 28th January 2025 from 13:00 to 16:30 GMT (6 hours CPD).

Course Description

Do you enjoy supporting clients suffering from chronic anxiety problems that include panic, OCD, phobias, and excessive worry?

Are you hoping to become a more powerful ACT Therapist?

Then, this workshop will show you how to use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and exposure effectively, coherently and efficiently.

While many practitioners have practised using traditional approaches to exposure therapy based on emotional processing theory, it’s important to note that these approaches are inconsistent with the latest research.

If you are looking for a clear framework and method to apply ACT for anxiety sufferers, then join us in January 2025.

Workshop Overview

This workshop offers a comprehensive guide on integrating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) principles with traditional exposure therapy to enhance therapeutic outcomes. Participants will explore the key differences between conventional exposure methods and ACT-enhanced approaches, focusing on fostering psychological flexibility rather than mere symptom reduction.

What you will learn

   1. Understand the Paradigm Shift:

  • Differentiate between traditional exposure therapy and ACT-enhanced exposure.
  • Comprehend the transition from a symptom-focused approach to one that emphasises psychological flexibility.

    2. Engaging Clients in Behavioural Change:

  •   Learn techniques to instil discomfort with the status quo using creative hopelessness interventions.
  • Develop strategies to enhance and maintain behaviour change through willingness.

    3. Designing Effective Exposure Exercises:

  • Identify core fears and anxiety themes to tailor precise exposure exercises.
  • Create a diverse menu of exposure activities aligned with clients’ valued life directions.
  • Develop tracking mechanisms that heighten clients’ awareness of progress and setbacks.
  • Design exposure forms that facilitate and document therapeutic progress.

    4. Coaching Clients Through Exposure:

  • Master the initiation of exposure exercises in collaboration with clients.
  • Implement effective practices during exposure exercises to maximise engagement and efficacy.
  • Conduct post-exposure debriefs to reinforce learning and encourage continued progress.

    5. Overcoming Common Obstacles:

  • Recognise and address therapist inflexibility regarding exposure interventions.
  • Identify common client pitfalls and implement strategies to overcome these barriers.
  • Determine appropriate endpoints for therapy, ensuring a productive and therapeutic conclusion.
