Title: CBS and the reduction of suffering associated with eating “disorders” (severe problems of eating and weight control)
Abstract: Many people around the world suffer from disordered eating and problematic weight control. These are serious problems. Anorexia nervosa continues to have the highest mortality rate of any mental health problem (not including opioid use), surpassed only by eating disorders that develop in individuals with type 1 diabetes. Mortality rates are the result of medical complications associated with the behaviors, as well as a high rate of suicide in individuals with these problems. The seriousness of the issue is juxtaposed to limited treatment access and efficacy. There are not enough practitioners with relevant expertise and secrecy and shame keeps people from seeking help. Half the people who receive our first line treatments do not improve. We must do better. This presentation will focus on how the strategies and tactics of CBS research could advance treatment. We will discuss the use of digital/mobile technology in assessment and intervention, and how combining individual and group-level insights of mechanism engagement could increase efficacy. While the content of the presentation will focus is on eating disorders, the methods or approach is applicable to a variety of problems in living.
