ACT/CBS Background and Training: My journey with ACT began over 10 years ago in the research space while I supported a research project applying ACT to young people who have a parent with cancer. Subsequently, I commenced an ACT-focused clinical PhD and undertook workshops by leaders in the field, including Dr Louise Hayes, Prof Joseph Ciarrochi, Dr Kelly Wilson and Dr Russ Harris. Throughout my clinical training, I received ongoing mentorship and supervision in applying ACT to children and youth, as well as individuals facing chronic health challenges. This foundation shaped my approach to psychological flexibility and values-based living in diverse populations. During my time at the Anxiety & Stress Clinic, I had the privilege of further refining my ACT practice under the supervision of Ann Bailey, where I deepened my understanding of emotionally focused applications of ACT.
In my current work as a clinical psychologist and supervisor, I integrate ACT principles into both therapy and clinical supervision, helping clinicians develop confidence in experiential and process-based ACT interventions. My clinical experience spans private practice, community mental health, and oncology settings, where I have used ACT to support adolescents, adults, and older adults in navigating psychological distress, adjustment challenges, and existential concerns. As a clinical psychologist in private practice, I incorporate ACT principles in therapy for a broad range of clients, including those experiencing anxiety, depression, chronic illness, and life transitions. During my tenure at Canteen, I applied ACT-based interventions to support young people impacted by cancer and contributed to research on ACT’s feasibility and effectiveness in this population. My research interests have also intersected with ACT, particularly in the areas of grief, caregiving, and client-centered care in health services. I have co-authored multiple publications on ACT-informed interventions and have presented at conferences on ACT’s role in palliative care and psycho-oncology.
