Are there websites for chapters?

Are there websites for chapters?

Every Chapter, SIG, and Affiliate is given a page on the ACBS website upon creation. ACBS staff puts in some info to keep the page from being blank, but then we encourange the Chapter, SIG, and Affiliate leaders to change the page. Let us know who needs access and the ACBS staff can make it possible for multiple people to edit the webpage. Keep some contact info on that main page, and make sure you only post public domain images, other than that, use it as a message board, or for whatever you like. All members have a link to THAT webpage via their dashboards.

If you have something that "I wish it was on the ACBS website" and your chapter is willing to put it together, make translations, etc., EMAIL THE ACBS STAFF. Talk to us, and let's see if we can figure out the best place to put your content and link it around the ACBS website (and back to your page of course) and make sure it remains accessible to as many as possible.

Some chapters and SIGs have websites independent of ACBS.  You can read about the benefits and pitfalls of independent websites here.

Chapter websites independent of ACBS

Should we have a separate website?

(Text below written by Emily Rodrigues, Executive Director of ACBS)

There isn't a right answer to this question, but I can tell you a bit of what I've seen.  I've seen it done very successfully, and I've seen it not done so well.

- It may be the right choice if you are operating in a language other than English, and you need the entire website in that language. It may work well if you really want/need your own URL for your own Domain Name.  Other than that, I recommend using the ACBS website.

- Some of the problems I've seen come up, are that the first Board of a Chapter is really energized and someone is really good with websites. If they get tired or move on (which happens) the Chapter can be left with a website they can't manage, and it can become very expensive, very quickly, if you need to hire someone to manage the website.

- If you do have your own Chapter website, to the degree possible, I strongly suggest that you try not to duplicate sections of the ACBS website. (like the therapist referral directory). You can of course, but it takes a lot of ongoing effort to keep that going.

Every Chapter is given a page on the ACBS website upon creation.  ACBS staff puts in some info to keep the page from being blank, but then we ENCOURAGE you to change the page.  Let us know who needs access and staff can make it possible for multiple people to edit it.  Keep some contact info on that main page, and make sure you only post public domain images, other than that, use it as a message board, or for whatever you like.  All members have a link to THAT page via their dashboards.

Chapter/SIG listserv posting guidelines

Chapter/SIG listserv posting guidelines

(2 Feb 2021 - Under construction)

If you are posting on an ACBS website (contextualscience.org) SIG or Chapter listserv, please keep the following guidelines in mind to make for a robust, professional, and pleasant communication experience.

1. Be mindful of others. Post thoughtfully and occasionally. Consider our global audience, and post inclusive, prosocial content that invites engagement from members of diverse and intersecting identities including: language, country of residence, national origin, race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, occupation, age, marital status, political belief, religion, and physical abilities.

2. Keep posts confidential. ACBS lists are not confidential, and posts can be reviewed by any ACBS member on the website. If you’re writing about a clinical issue, please omit any identifiable information.

3. Identify yourself with your full name and country of residence on all messages. Include credentials and business contact information if you’re comfortable sharing this information.

4. Stay on-topic and do not start new posts using someone else's subject line.

5. Search ACBS for past discussions related to your topic or question to review the history of the topic before posting and to avoid duplication.

6. Communicate with your values. Before posting, it may be helpful to ask yourself if your response is motivated by values you've chosen freely (e.g., curiosity, creativity, collaboration) or by something more automatic (e.g., the urge to look good, to be right, to sound scientific, etc.).

7. Question and challenge. Facilitate discussions related to contextual behavior science, practice, and contextual philosophy of science. Consider the overall vision of ACBS – the alleviation of human suffering and the advancement of human well-being through research and practice grounded in contextual behavioral science. Ask yourself whether your post is aligned with this vision.

8. Backchannel to limit email traffic and target your audience. If your response doesn’t need to be seen by other members, go off-list to continue the conversation. For example, thank you’s and brief comments should be directly emailed to the individual, not the listserv (members’ email addresses are near the top of their post).

9. Solve problems or contact moderators. Moderators do not intervene in discussions, but occasionally may post clarifications of the general guidelines. Resolve problems off-lists by directly emailing the member. If you need support or have questions about listserv posts or problems with other listserv members, please contact the SIG’s listserv’s moderators (POST A LINK), a SIG board member, or the ACBS Listserv Lead Moderator by using the Contact form on the ACBS website.

10. Pause before posting: actions have consequences. Hostile or discriminatory content in posts will not be tolerated. If the moderating team has asked you to try writing with a different tone or to take an argument off-list and the request has been ignored, you may temporarily lose the privilege of posting until we can discuss the matter further with you. These are the graduated sanctions for refusal to post with collegiality and compassion:

1. Written request that you pause before posting again

2. Explicit warning with details regarding the objectionable content and reminder of the next step the moderating team will take if the behavior continues

3. Six-month removal from the SIG’s listserv

4. Permanent removal from the SIG’s listserv

11. Limit marketing. You may give a one-time post to market for-profit trainings and books you produced. You are welcome to post about free materials that could be beneficial to the community.

Use the Digest feature to receive one daily email with a compilation of daily posts. You can opt into this format by going to My Account on the ACBS website, and clicking on Manage Group Subscriptions. More instructions about joining/changing/unsubscribing from ACBS listservs may be found here.

Creating a Listserv

Creating a Listserv

ACBS hosts a variety of email listservs which are home to vibrant discussions regarding a range of ACT, RFT, and CBS-related topics. A list of the listservs can be found here.

Most SIGs have their own listservs where members share information relevant to the SIG's focus or topic.  If you'd like to create a listserv for your Chapter or SIG, we trecommend you contact an ACBS staff member at acbsstaff @ contextualscience .org or staff @ contextualscience .org.

Listservs are Non-hierarchical, so everybody is encouraged to post information on the ACBS listservs.  If you have published an article or finished your dissertation and the topic is relevant to the SIG, then please post the information about your work so that the other SIG members can read it!

What should we have on the ACBS webpage for our group?

What should we have on the ACBS webpage for our group?

Your chapter or SIG should list the following information on your ACBS webpage:

- The full name of your chapter/SIG

- The year that your chapter/SIG joined ACBS

- The current contact person for your chapter/SIG

- Links to any listserv, independent website, or Facebook group that your chapter/SIG manages

- A SIG should have a mission statement that explains the focus of the SIG

- If your chapter includes several states or countries, then the webpage should list the specific states and countries that the chapter covers.
