Additional Information: I have been using ACT with my clients and in my own life for over 15 years. I used to have a faculty position at University of California in San Diego before I switched to a private practice.

I help my clients build self-compassion and present-centered awareness. The incessant negative talk that goes on in our minds prevents us from getting in touch with our true selves. It prevents us from recognizing and realizing our full potential. The secret to breaking free from this negative mind chatter is to use mindfulness skills and ACT. With mindfulness we can look at each moment for what it is, letting go of ideas of how things should be. With mindfulness we are able to see and appreciate reality the way it is right now. When we struggle less with reality and open up to the now, we are able to also see the potential for growth and positive change that also exists in each moment. Continued use of mindfulness helps turn down the volume of the negative radio stations of the mind and frees us from addictions and self-defeating habits.

From this place of awareness I help my clients with recognizing their life purpose. A sense of meaning and purpose in life is the key to happiness and fulfillment. When the sense of purpose is clouded over, it drains vitality from our lives. It is hard to feel happy even when surrounded by good things, comfort and privilege. When we can recognize what gives our life meaning we can start moving in that direction. This alignment of our actions and goals with our "true north" gives a sense of happiness in spite of obstacles and challenges.
