CBS-friendly (e.g. ACT, FAP) Pre-Doctoral Internship Sites
CBS-friendly (e.g. ACT, FAP) Pre-Doctoral Internship SitesThis list includes institutions and individuals offering ACT-friendly pre-doctoral internship sites.
In recent years, ACT is becoming more and more prevalent at internship training programs, so this list is most certainly not complete. Of note is that since the VA has started an official nation-wide 'roll-out' of ACT, almost every VA has someone who is conducting ACT with clients and possibly even training others in ACT. Additionally, due to a broadening of both ACT and Non-ACT reserachers seeking grant funding for ACT-related research, many sites that may not seem heavily-focused on ACT may provide additional experience in ACT for the internship year.

ACT Internship Program - VA Palo Alto Health Care System, Palo Alto, CA
ACT Internship Program - VA Palo Alto Health Care System, Palo Alto, CAVA Palo Alto ACT Mini Rotation
We have an ACT friendly internship program here at Palo Alto VA with an opportunity to be trained in ACT, conduct individual therapy and co-lead ACT groups.
Purpose of Mini Rotation:
Many individuals suffering from mental health issues often actively work to avoid their personal experiences of emotion, thought and sensation. However, these very actions often result in loss and increased suffering. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a behaviorally based intervention designed to address avoidance of internal events and the role that language plays in human suffering. The therapy specifically uses a number of verbal, experiential and homework interventions to help patients make experiential contact with previously avoided private events (thoughts, feelings, sensations), without excessive verbal involvement and control – and to make powerful life enhancing choices. ACT is a manual-based intervention that can be applied with a number of populations. The mini-rotation provides a combination of didactic and supervised clinical experience in the use of ACT across a number of settings at the Palo Alto VA.
Structure of the Mini-Rotation:
Time Commitment: Trainees interested in the mini-rotation work at their sites providing individual and group ACT. Trainees are expected to attend a weekly, 1.5 hour group supervision and read relevant materials. As well, each participant completes an ACT project that is disseminated via the web to other ACT providers across the nation. The time commitment is approximately 4 hours per week. The trainee needs to negotiate with the supervisors of his/her major rotations for the necessary time or do this rotation as an add-on above the basic 40 hours.

Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program - Brown Medical School, Providence, RI
Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program - Brown Medical School, Providence, RIThe Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University provides training at the predoctoral level for students interested in careers relevant to clinical science, research, and practice. The overall training philosophy of the program reflects a commitment to the development of psychologists who will apply scientific knowledge to human behavior in clinical practice and who will advance clinical science research. The Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program is committed to the mission of increasing diversity among its trainees and faculty.
The Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program prefers students currently matriculated in an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited doctoral program in Clinical Psychology or equivalent. Applicants from Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS) accredited programs will be considered. Successful applicants to our program typically come from training programs with a strong clinical science or scientist-practitioner emphasis.
The Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program accepts applications from international, non-US citizens. International students cannot be supported through the 6 positions funded through the Providence VA Medical Center. [Note: The Clinical Psychology Training Consortium is in the process of arranging a Disbursement Agreement between the Consortium and VA Medical Center for VA site experiences. Once in place all trainees will be employed through Butler Hospital.]
Applicants who are accepted into the training program on a visa may be required to meet minimum funding requirements. Funding from sources other than the Clinical Psychology Internship Training Program (private sponsor, your government, scholarship, personal funds, etc.) can be considered to meet the minimum requirements. Please check directly with your current institution's International Student and Scholar Services office for required documentation.
All candidates for admission will have adequate preparation for internship as indicated by a statement from the applicant's Program Director. A minimum of 500 contact hours (supervision does not count towards contact hours) of formal, supervised practicum training is required. The total number of practicum hours is the total completed intervention hours plus the total completed assessment hours. Although 500 hours will be the minimum for consideration, 800 remains program preference given program data that support this number as the threshold at which people have been best prepared for the Brown Clinical Psychology Internship. As part of our holistic review, consideration is also given to clinical hours and experiences that have exposed applicants to evidence-based assessment and intervention practices with a variety of populations at different levels of clinical acuity.

Doctoral Internship - UT Dallas Student Counseling Center, Richardson, TX
Doctoral Internship - UT Dallas Student Counseling Center, Richardson, TXThe doctoral internship at the UT Dallas Student Counseling Center (SCC) is an APA-accredited full-time, 12-month-long, organized, 2000-hour training program in health service psychology that provides comprehensive supervised experiences in University counseling center services and functions.
The doctoral internship program provided a practitioner model of training. Our primary training modality is experiential, emphasizing clinical practice and service delivery with the goal of creating ethical and culturally competent generalist practitioners. We use a developmental approach to facilitate the transition from graduate student to professional psychologist. Through close relationships with senior staff and supervisors, interns assume increasing levels of responsibility and autonomy, expanding their professional roles as the year progresses.
Training is focused on facilitating interns’ clinical competence, fostering the development of professional judgment, and enriching interns’ scientific and practice-based knowledge.
We are also deeply committed to facilitating the integration of interns’ personal and professional identities through engaging them in supportive, challenging supervisory and mentoring relationships with a heightened focus on whom the intern is as an individual and how that impacts them professionally. In addition, our internship program is based largely on a relational “use of self” training model, as we believe that optimal professional development occurs within the context of self-reflection and personal exploration. The “use of self” model refers not only to clinical work, but to all training and supervisory experiences. Interns are expected to explore values, beliefs, biases and reactions in all of their training contexts.

Doctoral Internship - University of Houston Clear Lake Counseling Services, Houston, TX
Doctoral Internship - University of Houston Clear Lake Counseling Services, Houston, TXUH-Clear Lake is one of four distinct institutions in the University of Houston System and houses both undergraduate and graduate programs. Many of our students have roots in the local communities and join us from a variety of cultural, academic, and vocational backgrounds. As a counseling center, we aim to help UHCL students connect, become empowered, and thrive through the therapeutic, outreach, and consultative services we offer. Our center is highly valued by university administration and appreciated by faculty and staff.
We are a smaller center, consisting of four psychologists, two therapists, two social workers, one consulting psychiatric provider, three interns, and three part-time practicum students when fully staffed. Because of the size of our center, interns have unique opportunities to be engaged in meaningful ways with our staff and across campus. In addition to being incorporated into the daily activities and operations of the center, interns are able to interact with various constituents and partners on campus and thereby can develop professional skills in networking and collaboration with non-psychologists on a university campus. A past intern even had the opportunity to serve on the selection committee of a hiring process in another department.
We consistently receive feedback from psychology trainees that our investment in training, developmentally oriented, high quality supervision, and safe learning environment make our program stand out. We seek to provide interns a final year of graduate training in which they can refine clinical skills to a level appropriate for early career practice. Moreover, we aim to provide an environment that is both nurturing and challenging, grounded in an appreciation of diversity and multiculturalism, and which facilitates personal and professional identity development and integration in preparation for a satisfying career. We hope that our commitment to excellent training is as evident in our training program materials as we believe that it is when trainees meet us. As a center, we are extremely invested in continuing to cultivate and refine a topnotch internship program.

Doctoral Internship - VA Long Beach Healthcare System, CA
Doctoral Internship - VA Long Beach Healthcare System, CAWe regret to announce that changes within our department have resulted in a cessation of recruitment for the 2023-2024 training year, and we are withdrawing our program from the APPIC Match for the 2023-2024 cycle. All of our staff remain incredibly passionate about training, and we want to offer the best program possible. We plan to re-open our recruitment for the 2024-2025 training year.

Training Director & Lead / Director: Leela Farina, Ph.D.
Chief Psychologist:
Positions: 0 for 2023-2024
Stipend: 30,031
Primary Agency Type: Veterans Affairs Medical Center
Descriptor The VA Long Beach Doctoral Internship Program has been fully accredited by APA since 1980. Our primary goal is to train interns to conduct an array of psychological services in a general health care facility. Although our psychology staff provide some very specialized services, we believe that training at the predoctoral level should be broadly based rather than narrowly focused. The generalist training that we provide reflects the population of our medical center and outlying clinics. We serve primarily adult veterans and some active military service personnel, the majority of whom are male but with a higher percentage of women in younger cohorts. We've been known for our behavioral health training as well as more traditional psychological services. As with all health care systems, we have undergone a major shift from inpatient to outpatient treatment in both medical and mental health settings. We accept both clinical and counseling students and no distinction is made between them concerning the content of training experiences. We tailor our internship program to the specific needs of each intern. During orientation week, all staff psychologists present to the interns and practicum students to explain what training experiences their rotation offers. With the advisement of the Training Director interns select 4-5 rotations that blend their individual training needs and interests. Our program follows a traditional apprenticeship model where the intern works closely with her or his supervisor. The degree of responsibility and structure afforded the interns depends on their level of experience coming into each rotation. Our program also includes intern seminar, grand rounds, journal club, release time to attend any offered trainings needed for CA licensing at local sites, and other rotation-specific didactic and interdisciplinary experiences. Intern offices are located in the same area to foster close interaction.

Doctoral Psychology Internship - Sharp HealthCare, San Diego, CASharp HealthCare is San Diego's largest health care organization and the city's largest employer outside the military.
Sharp is a private, not-for-profit organization operated by a local board of directors. It offers complete health care to a large part of the San Diego population through a network of hospitals, clinics and physician organizations. Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital is the largest private freestanding psychiatric hospital in California and Sharp Grossmont is the largest full-service hospital in the region.
Sharp HealthCare's APA-accredited psychology doctoral internship in clinical psychology provides psychologists-in-training with a yearlong, in-depth training experience.

Health Service Psychology Doctoral Internship - Duke University, Durham, NC
Health Service Psychology Doctoral Internship - Duke University, Durham, NCA central vision of the Duke Health Services Psychology Doctoral Internship Program is to provide the breadth to ensure core competencies while giving opportunities to pursue depth into a specific concentration of health service psychology.
Aims of the Internship Program
The overall aim of the program is to provide the breadth of training to ensure the development of all profession-wide competencies. Training takes place within the context and spirit of the scientist-practitioner and clinical scientist models, with the goal of producing health service psychologists who will be able to thrive in a variety of academic and health care settings.
A second aim of the program is to help interns explore and develop areas of concentration to prepare them for early career development in research, clinical work, and/or education.
Supervision & Mentoring
To enhance capabilities as a supervisor, interns participate in a monthly supervision series throughout the year. For the first half of the internship year, the series focuses on didactic training in supervision. In the second half of the year, the series shifts to the practice of supervision, with interns supervising practicum students and other clinical learners.
Early in the internship year, each intern chooses a faculty member for ongoing mentoring throughout the year about issues relevant to their professional growth (e.g., getting a postdoc or faculty position, balancing one’s life with career aspirations, etc.).
Growth Mindset
Our internship program explicitly focuses on the development of a “growth mindset” to cultivate resiliency and instill values of life-long learning. Dweck’s (2006) research demonstrates that a “growth mindset” is one that embraces challenges, learns from mistakes and feedback, and focuses on effort.

Predoctoral Psychology Internship - Southern Arizona VA Health Care System, Tucson, AZ, U.S.A
Predoctoral Psychology Internship - Southern Arizona VA Health Care System, Tucson, AZ, U.S.AOur doctoral Internship is fully APA accredited. Our last site visit occurred in October 2021 and awarded 10 years of accreditation. The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System Predoctoral Internship Program is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) with information included in the APPIC directory. As such, our program abides by all APPIC policies as well as matching policies and procedures.
The internship is committed to the practitioner scholar model of professional psychology. Education involves the accumulation of theoretical, empirical, and experiential knowledge. The clinical psychology internship at SAVAHCS provides a professional setting in which training is pursued primarily within the experiential sphere. This training can be conceptualized as the highest level of the applied aspect of doctoral training. The emphasis of the internship is therefore upon the development of clinical skill through supervised experience in the application of theoretical and empirical knowledge.
Although the experiential component of professional education is emphasized, theoretical and empirical issues are not neglected. Weekly psychology didactics and educational activities are available through the facility and VHA are also available to trainees. Other seminars and symposia occur throughout the year through the University of Arizona, and the Arizona Health Sciences Center.

The primary goal of the internship program at CAPS is to prepare trainees for functioning as independent professional psychologists with specific skills in the treatment of a diverse population of college students. The program consists of numerous clinical and didactic opportunities that build upon one another, allowing the intern to gradually attain increasing levels of clinical autonomy through the course of the year. Close attention is paid to supervision with the program's history rooted in a mentor/apprecticeship model. Self-reflection and self-awareness are prioritized. Interns participate in a number of experiential activities, including the provision of individual, group and couples' therapy; crisis management and risk assessment; consultation and collaboration. Opportunities to engage in outreach are ongoing. Interns receive significant didactic training and supervision in support of these experiences. Intern seminars focus on bridging theory and practice. Specific foci of seminars include case conceptualization, ethics and professional development, diversity issues, group therapy, the provision of supervision, and the challenges of meeting the needs of a college population. Interns are given opportunities to gain more specialized training in the areas of outreach and mandated assessments. Our internship program gives particular attention to multicultural awareness, in concern for the diversity of the student population that we serve and in concern for our belief in the importance of training professionals who are well-equipped to provide services to all individuals. The internship training program functions with an explicit awareness of the importance of affirming the experiences of LGBTQ-identified students as well as individuals from racially- and religiously-persecuted groups.
We have an integrative psychodynamic approach, with many practitioners aligning with depth-oriented approaches. At the same time, we tailor our interventions to meet the needs of our students which often includes short-term interventions. We begin by assessing what our clients need and what their capacities are; we develop a case formulation and tend to the therapeutic relationship from a psychodynamic perspective. Additionally, we integrate techniques from other treatment modalities (e.g., CBT, DBT, ACT, mindfulness, etc.) in helping our clients achieve change. It is our goal to train interns in how to thoughtfully integrate these techniques into an integrative philosophy of understanding clinical phenomena.

VA Maine Healthcare System (Togus, Maine)
VA Maine Healthcare System (Togus, Maine)The Clinical Psychology Training Program at the Togus campus of VA Maine Healthcare System currently offers ACT training in the Pain Psychology and Geropsychology rotations.
The Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Intensive Outpatient Program (Pain IOP) within the Pain Psychology rotation is an intensive ACT training experience. In addition to interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation inclusive of pain education and mindful movement, ACT is presented to a cohort of veterans who live with chronic pain in a "workshop" format across 14 classes (groups) over five to six days. Veterans who have completed from the 1- to 2-week-long program are offered aftercare follow-up support in the form of additional groups (unlimited) or individual "coaching" sessions. This intervention is structured in an intensive outpatient program treatment model unique to pain rehabilitation (virtual programs span 6 days over two weeks, face-to-face programs follow a 5-day weeklong schedule). The program conducts 6-9 cohorts per year. ACT is also a major component of the Functional Pain School series, introduced via the ACT matrix in two of four educational sessions. The remaining weeks are for assessment, individual sessions, consultation and program development. Interns and Residents function as junior colleagues within a multidisciplinary team of pain medicine providers and rehabilitation specialists in this dynamic educational process.
Geriatric and Extended Care Psychology offers ACT for older adult veterans in our Outpatient Clinic and inpatient Community Living Center. Following important significant life events like retirement, functional impairments due to chronic illness, or end-of-life issues, older adults may experience losses and lose connection with their deeply held values in the process of trying to solve problems that are unchangeable. The goal of our ACT interventions are to reconnect veterans with their values by helping them to accept declines that are unchangeable and identify goals that are attainable in the context of values-driven behavior. Interns and Residents have opportunities to deliver ACT interventions, to provide consultation to multidisciplinary teams, and to engage in program development and evaluation.

Within a supportive and collegial atmosphere, we seek to facilitate development of a reflective approach to practice that integrates empirical knowledge and delivery of clinical services. Interns are viewed as making the transition from the student role to the professional colleague role over the course of the training year, honing the clinical skills ultimately required for independent practice. Opportunities are offered for continued training in areas of practice that interns may already be familiar with, as well as introduction to unfamiliar treatment orientations and clinical challenges.
At the start of the training year, interns undergo several days of orientation to our department as well as 3 days of orientation to the medical center. They visit potential rotation sites and potential supervisors to compose a training experience that best fits their interests and needs. The Training Director and Training Co-Director are advocates for interns and other Psychology trainees at the facility. The Director and Co-Director meet regularly with interns to respond to their concerns.
Interns receive informal feedback from supervisors throughout the year in addition to formal evaluations at mid-rotation and at the end of each rotation. Evaluations emphasize the intern's strengths and identify areas in need of improvement. In turn, interns evaluate their supervisors and the supervision experience. Evaluations are mutually shared and discussed between intern and supervisor in an atmosphere that fosters personal and professional development. Written summaries of these evaluations are furnished to the intern and graduate institution at mid-year and at the end of the training year. It is expected that interns will differ in the extent to which they require training in the expected competencies. It is further expected that there may be instances where an intern's behaviors, attitudes, or other characteristics impact the learning process, relationships with others, and/or patient care. These issues are typically addressed in supervision, but if skill deficits are noted in any of these areas, a formal remediation plan may be established to address the deficits. If skill deficits cannot be remediated, provisional completion of the internship and/or termination from the internship will be considered.
