ACT/CBS Background and Training: I first became interested in ACT in around 2004 via the Contextual CBT for Chronic Pain work of Lance McCracken. Since 2006 I have attended almost every World Con / Summer Institute as well as participating in other ACT, FAP and RFT training. In 2011 I passed the peer review process to become a member of the ACT training community. In November 2011 I was appointed by the ACBS Board as Chair of the ACBS Training Committee and served in that role until July 2015. I currently train and supervise others in ACT, and lead a programme of research and teaching work at the University of Edinburgh.
ACT/CBS Experience: I have extensive experience treating people with chronic pain, using primarily ACT. I also supervise doctoral students on ACT related research projects across a wide variety of areas.
Additional Information: My work on the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Programme involves teaching ACT, as well as providing a clinical placement in the pain service, which can be ACT based. I also supervise the doctoral dissertations of DClinPsychol and PhD students.
Our lab is working on several current ACT based research topics including the development of the Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire (in collaboration with Helen Bolderston and Frank Bond), as well as an intervention for Irritable Bowel Syndrome and several cross sectional designs using questionnaire methods to test various predictions from ACT and Cognitive models concerning adjustment and living well in chronic conditions such as pain, IBS, diabetes and psychosis.
I deliver training in ACT on a consultancy basis. If you are interested in purchasing ACT training contact me via email. You can also check out my training page for goodies: http://contextualscience.org/david_gillanders_training_page
I also organise a peer interest group in the East of Scotland. If you are in our area and using ACT please get in touch!
Finally; I served the community as a committee member of the BABCP ACT SIG between 2006 and 2012 and was involved in helping to establish the first board of the UK Chapter of ACBS. I was Chair of the ACBS Training Committee from 2011 to 2015.
