Values-Aligned Functioning

Values-Aligned Functioning

Personal values influence behavior, relationships, leadership, and decision-making. Although values clarification is well established across counseling, coaching, leadership development, and organizational practice, many existing approaches focus primarily on identifying or ranking values rather than organizing them into a practical framework for everyday application.

Values-Aligned Functioning (Values AF) is a structured methodology that extends traditional values clarification by helping individuals organize their values into a coherent, hierarchical framework that can guide reflection, communication, behavior, and decision-making.

The methodology is designed to move beyond identifying what matters toward understanding how values relate to one another and how they can be intentionally expressed in daily life. Values AF organizes values into a Guiding Light Value, Core Values, and Supporting Values, creating a personalized values map that reflects an individual's priorities and lived experiences. The methodology then translates this structure into behavioral statements and integrated narratives that can support leadership development, coaching, counseling, organizational consulting, and personal growth.

The framework draws upon principles from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychodynamic psychotherapy, humanistic and cognitive-behavioral traditions, and structured group decision-making methods, while introducing an original process for organizing and applying values. Rather than replacing existing approaches to values clarification, Values AF offers an additional methodology that complements established evidence-informed practices.

This white paper introduces the conceptual foundations of Values AF, describes its methodology, explores potential applications, and illustrates its outputs through examples of a completed values map, behavioral statements, and an executive leadership narrative. The paper is intended to establish the conceptual basis of the framework and provide a foundation for future implementation, training, and empirical investigation
